Expanding an owner’s retreat and adding a detached studio in San Mateo
Brian and Dawn, homeowners in San Mateo, needed more space in their home and a renewed, larger space for their family and other guests to stay in. They approached New Avenue for an addition to their main home and a new accessory structure for their back yard.
Brian and Dawn’s New Avenue designer created plans to replace the existing accessory structure with a new 352-square-foot detached studio with a half bathroom. A new western red cedar deck and concrete gas firepit give the owners and their guests a comfortable outdoor place to relax or entertain.
The designer also created plans to extend the owner’s suite in the main home, giving the homeowners more space in their bedroom and bathroom.
Here are the plans.
Over a decade of design/build experience in the Bay Area has shown us that most older homes need four changes to bring them up to date:
A larger owner’s suite
An open kitchen/living area
Whole-house sustainability upgrades
One or two accessory dwellings
These homeowners have made a smart move in expanding their home and replacing their old, small accessory dwelling with a structure that is larger and more useful to their family. And by partnering with New Avenue, they were supported by experienced professionals through every step.
