Cost to design a new single-family home with a unit for elder parents in Burlingame, CA
Francis and Amy, the parents of two young children, wanted to build a new single-family home in Burlingame, CA, for their family. Desiring a home they could live in and that they could alter as their needs changed, they came to New Avenue for design services.
One of their main goals was to create a structure that would serve as a main residence for them and could become a multigenerational home once their parents needed to move in. Their vision included an accessory dwelling within the main home that could be rented out through short-term rental services such as Airbnb or VRBO. When needed, that accessory dwelling unit could be a place for Francis' and Amy's elder parents to live.
A New Avenue partner designer designed a home that would serve the family's needs and keep them comfortable. The accessory dwelling has a separate entrance from the main home, making it renter-friendly.
The accessory dwelling part of the home, which is on the ground floor, consists of one bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen, a dining area, and a living area.
The main home's first floor has a kitchen, a dining area, a living area, an office, a bathroom, and a foyer. The foyer was specifically designed to house the family's piano and is open to the second floor above.
On the second floor of the main home is the master suite. The master bedroom is large enough to include a sitting area and has two large closets. The office is adjacent to the master bedroom. There are three additional bedrooms and a bathroom with a double vanity. Skylights make the second floor brighter during the day and cut down on electricity use for lighting.
This bright, spacious home meets the needs of Francis and Amy, and it will serve them well as their family grows and changes.
At the time of this project, the total cost for design was $20,497.41. In 2020, the cost would be $23,572.00. You can view the entire design budget below.
