Project of the Week: a huge ADU in El Cerrito
The homeowner plans to live in the ADU while renting out the property's main house.
Why not both?
You know the phrase "Go big or go home."
Well, we say you can do both.
New Avenue is working on a really big ADU in El Cerrito. With two large bedrooms, an open kitchen, a dining area, a laundry room, and an entertaining/living space, this huge ADU lives bigger than many homes.
In fact, it will be a home.
An investment and a home
Our client, a successful entrepreneur, knows a good opportunity when she sees one. That's why she decided to add an ADU and live in it herself. (She plans to rent out her main house.) While she didn’t feel like she needed the additional income, she knew it would be a great investment.
Since the ADU will be the owner's residence, we focused our design on making it a beautiful, comfortable place to live—one that suits the client's personality and needs.
The living room, kitchen, and dining area (highlighted in orange below) are all connected, making the home the perfect place to entertain guests or enjoy time with loved ones. The kitchen island is positioned to allow the homeowner to interact with her partner or guests while cooking. The island is also a nice place to gather for a meal, drinks, or conversation.
The common areas (orange) and primary bedroom (yellow) have cathedral ceilings, making this already large ADU feel even more spacious.
When designing an accessory dwelling, we carefully consider privacy and outdoor space for both the ADU and the main home. We designed this ADU in an L-shape, creating a natural space for a patio. The ADU’s shape and orientation give both homes privacy and outdoor space with plenty of sun.
Because this ADU has a large primary suite along with a second bedroom and a second bathroom, it can be used in many ways. If the homeowner decides to move back into the main home, she can rent out the ADU. She may also opt to rent out both homes in the future.
