Shared Space for Collaboration…Private Spaces for Meetings (And It Makes a Gorgeous Guest Suite!)
We worked with this standout couple to understand exactly what they had in mind and created a new building: a 481-square-foot ADU that does it all.
Their new ADU, which includes two connected studios, a kitchen, and a bathroom, replaces the shed they were using as an office. We were able to place the new building on the property line because of the existing shed, and we made use of an existing cinderblock wall in the design.
Most of the time, the ADU will be an art studio and office where they can work both individually and together. For a few days each year, the ADU will be a home away from home for their out-of-town friends and family.
This ADU boasts plenty of versatile space that can quickly adapt to the owners' needs. A sliding door separates the two studios, allowing for quiet individual work or open collaboration. Four-panel Milgard doors on the front of the building and floor-to-ceiling windows bring in tons of afternoon light. Skylights in one studio provide ample light for drawing.
Each studio has its own sink and cabinets, and the ADU is equipped with a kitchen that's just right for work, entertaining, relaxing, and hosting. A modern bathroom with a luxury shower is a refreshing oasis for everyday or guest use. One studio has room for a sofa bed, so it can easily be converted into a bedroom for guests.
Modern Finishes for a Clean, Inspirational Space
A subway tile backsplash, a quartz countertop, and black faucets and hardware give the ADU a clean, refreshing look that encourages clear, creative thinking. Hardie siding on the exterior gives the ADU a modern feel and makes it blend well with the primary home and the neighborhood.
We used polished concrete floors throughout the ADU. They're beautiful, durable, and low-maintenance. It's the perfect choice for an art studio, a guest suite, a home, or an ADU that will serve as all three.
Outdoor Elegance and Practical Design
Outside, the homeowners and their guests can enjoy an outdoor shower to rinse off sand and anything else they don't want to bring into the house. A gorgeous, versatile space between the ADU and the main home provides a place to play, grill, and enjoy the fresh air.
