$150 per month covers 100% of their Electric Bill.

We got the costs and savings for two different solar systems on the same home. Here's what we learned.

If you've been following us, you probably know that we're HUGE fans of numbers. Want to know what a houselift and lower-level ADU will cost? How about a detached garage conversion? Want to know how much permits in your city tend to cost? Wondering what percentage of your total budget goes to building materials?

We can tell you, because we eat, drink, and breathe data. It's kind of our thing.

So ,when we got two in-depth estimates from Synergy Power for solar panels on a home in Berkeley, we wanted to share them with you.

The family of four living in this home typically uses 3,625 kWh per year, which includes charging a vehicle. With that usage in mind, we compared two systems:

1) A 6.8 kW-DC system, which produces 7,806 kWh per year

2) A  2.8 kW-DC system, which produces 3,746 kWh per year

Here's what Synergy Power told us about the likely costs and saving with each system.

The 6.8 kW-DC System (7,806 kWh per year)

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

The 2.8 kW-DC System (3,746 kWh per year)

The larger system pays for itself in savings in 9.7 years. The smaller one pays for itself in 6.5 years.

While the larger system costs more, it also produces more savings, saving the homeowners over $15,000 more across thirty years. Whether the up-front cost is worth the additional savings over time will depend on the family's plans for the present and future. That's why we love options, and it's why we obsess over data.

Detached ADUs in California require solar.

In California, all new detached ADUs are required to have solar power. Attached ADUs, existing spaces being remodeled into ADUs, and carve-out ADUs do not require solar, but it's a great option to consider.

If you're building a new space or remodeling an existing one, you'll need to understand what's possible for your property, what the law requires, and what your options are. We've got you covered with a knowledgeable, experienced design/build team and real-world data from hundreds of completed projects.
