Cost to design and permit a home remodel in Fairfax, CA

Peg and Dave, homeowners in Fairfax, CA, were ready to move into a smaller place, and their son, Dash, planned to move into his parents' home. They liked the idea of multigenerational housing, with Dash and his family living in the main home while Peg and Dave lived in an accessory dwelling on the same property. It was a long-term plan, and they decided to get started right away.

After talking with some general contractors about prefab construction and design/build services, they came to New Avenue for design services. They wanted to maximize the amount of space they could get for their budgeted amount.

They started with the remodel of the main home. A New Avenue design professional presented them with schemes that would increase the number of bedrooms and update the space.

In one option, the existing master bedroom would be divided into two smaller bedrooms, and one of the kids' bedrooms would be opened up to become the new master suite. In the second option, the existing master suite would stay as it was, and a second-story bedroom would be added over the master suite.
