Cost to design and permit a 700-square-foot accessory dwelling in San Jose

When Hanh decided to add an accessory dwelling unit to her backyard, she came to New Avenue for design services. She wanted a place for her parents to live in the short term and that could be rented out in the future.

A New Avenue partner designer designed an accessory dwelling unit to meet Hanh's needs. As part of the design process, the design professional planned for appropriate drainage on the property. Much of the pavement in the backyard would have to be removed, so the design professional added a permeable deck to the design.

The final design was for a 700-square-foot detached secondary dwelling unit with one bedroom, one bathroom, and a loft. Also included were a full kitchen and a laundry area.
