Our New Coastal Retreat Is Perfect for Relaxing, Entertaining, and Living Life to the Fullest.

We're excited to say we've helped another family realize their dreams. This project is in Santa Cruz, where beach vibes and active lifestyles meet community and culture. We built this 1,000-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath detached ADU behind an existing home near the shore.

The homeowners developed this space for several reasons:

1. They wanted a vacation home in Santa Cruz for themselves and their guests.
2. They wanted a barrier-free dwelling near the beach—the perfect place to age in place!
3. They wanted an in-demand property that they could rent out if they ever needed more income.

This serene retreat blends modern elegance with practical touches, offering a versatile home that can meet their needs now and in the future.

Featuring a bright great room, a fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and an easy-access patio, it’s a stylish and functional addition that will pay off big for the homeowners.

Located in a vibrant neighborhood near beaches and parks, this ADU enhances the homeowners’ lifestyle while adding convenience, luxury, and value to their beloved home.

Here's a look at what we created in partnership with the homeowners.

The Coastal Escape features a variety of timeless finishes and modern touches designed to blend durability with elegance while enhancing comfort, accessibility, and environmental harmony.

Thanks to New Avenue’s expertise and obsession with a holistic development process, we masterfully handled these 10 challenges:

1. Curbless showers installed atop a concrete slab floor. (This presents a particular challenge in creating a recess that allows the tile to align with the rest of the floor while sloping down to a drain.)
2. Barrier-free shower glass for enhanced accessibility.
3. A solid-pine living room wall treatment to counter the modern feel.
4. Hardie Artisan siding with mitered corners for a super clean look. 
5. Trimless, stepped interior window treatments around natural pine windows. 
6. Complex, custom-designed drainage around the outside perimeter to preserve the surrounding environment.
7. An outdoor feet-washing station for cleaning off beach sand before entering the residence. 
8. A custom, decorative privacy screen between the ADU and the main residence. 
9. An exceptionally large 12'x7' sliding door set to shower light on the living room. 
10. A 275-square-foot patterned concrete paver patio for low-impact natural drainage.
